QUO61C NGU74

Quo61c Ngu74 (national language) is a romanized Vietnamese script.
Vietnamese language borrows much of its basic vocabulary from Mon-Khmer,
tonality from Thai language, and some grammatical features from Mon-Khmer,
Thai, and Austronesian languages. It was influenced by classical Chinese
more than any other language. Beginning in the eight century, the
Vietnamese devised the popular Chu74 No6m script, which combined ideographs
and phonetics.
The Vietnamese alphabet was phonetically romanized in 1548 by French and
Portuguese missionaries. Quo61c Ngu74 uses diacritical marks above and
below vowels to indicate variations in pronunciation. Both Chu74 No6m and
Quo61c Ngu74 are systems for transcribing the same vernacular Vietnamese.
Vietnamese is a monosyllabic tonal language. Each syllable can be
pronounced in six different tones to confer totally different meanings. The
tones are expressed by five diacritical accents and one atonic, where the
syllable has no accent.
Quo61c Ngu74 was used initially only by missionaries. It gradually became
widely used because it was easy to learn and led to a high degree of
literacy and a flourishing of Vietnamese literature. In 1906, the study of
Quo61c Ngu74 became compulsory in secondary schools. Two years later the
Ministry of Education established a new curriculum entirely in Quo61c Ngu74.
In 1909, the triennial literary examinations were abolished, and Quo61c
Ngu74 became the national written language.
